Sensing

Description

The Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) has been considered an excellent sensor element, suitable for measuring static and dynamic fields, such as temperature, strain and pressure. It can be mounted on surfaces and/or embedded directly into structures to provide an optical alternative to conventional sensors.

Using our proprietary technology, Technica specializes in manufacturing high value-added fiber Bragg gratings for fiber sensing applications. The fiber Bragg grating sensors, when used in conjunction with an interrogation system, provide detailed information such as strain, temperature or other parameters. The sensor network can be specifically designed to meet individual customers’ requirements such that the sensors are positioned at critical load points within structures. Suitable embedding or bonding techniques allow the sensors to be integrated into the body structures, ensuring accurate and reliable results.

Applications

Long term monitoring, risk and damage assessment of:

Civil Engineering, smart health monitoring (bridges, tunnels, buildings)

Energy (wind turbines, pipelines, nuclear reactors)

Oil & Gas (platform structural health monitoring)

Transportation (railways, roadways)

Distinguishing Advantages

Self-referencing – wavelength encode measurand information

Multiplexing capability – number of FBGs can be multiplexed in one single fiber

Remote Sensing – long distance between sensors and sensor to instruments

Small size and light weight

Corrosion proof

Passive sensor – immune to EMI, eliminates ESD and spark hazard

Reliable – orders of magnitude more resistant to fatigue and much more resistant to peaking (instant high level of shock) than conventional electronic strain gauges
